Nursing Information & Data Set Evaluation Center

Nursing Information & Data Set Evaluation Center

Background

The Nursing Information & Data Set Evaluation Center was established by the American Nurses Association (ANA) to review, evaluate against defined criteria, and recognize information systems from developers and manufacturers that support documentation of nursing care within automated Nursing Information Systems (NIS) or within computer-based Patient Record systems (CPR).

In December 1995, the ANA Board of Directors approved the establishment of the Nursing Information & Data Set Evaluation Center (NIDSECSM) and has funded its operations annually since then. The NIDSECSM originated from a proposal by a joint Task Force appointed by the Congress of Nursing Practice Steering Committee on Databases to Support Clinical Nursing Practice and the Congress of Nursing Practice Committee on Nursing Practice Standards and Guidelines.

NIDSECSM Mission

The Nursing Information & Data Set Evaluation Center:

Standards

NIDSECSM has developed standards to evaluate four dimensions of nursing data sets and the systems that contain them.

  1. Nomenclature (the terms used)
A listing of the ANA Recognized Terminologies That Support Nursing Practice can be found on the Web site of Nursing Practice Information In fastructure:

  2. Clinical Content (the "linkages" among terms),

  3. Clinical Data Repository (how the data are stored and made accessible for retrieval), and

  4. General System Characteristics (such as performance and attention to security and confidentiality).

The NIDSECSM standards follow the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) model for evaluation. The NIDSECSM standards and scoring guidelines are under revision and are expected to be published by April 2006. Please contact Dr. Carol J. Bickford by telephone at 301-628-5060 or via e-mail for more information.

The ANA Recognition period is for three years from the year in which the application was approved. At the end of the three-year period, a new application must be submitted.
